DANCE LIKE A GREEK

Traditional Greek Dance And Culture Seminars

ACCOMMODATION IN IKARIA – THE CAMPUS

Ikarian Center, a place with a long tradition in teaching Greek to non-native speakers, will be hosting us. The campus provides accommodation in Ikaria for students and participants of different learning holiday courses. It is located at an isolated spot on a hillside between the coastal village of Karavostamo (4 km, 40 minutes on foot) and Arethousa (1.5 km, 20min on foot), at an altitude of 300m.

A breathtaking landscape combines views of the sea and the island’s mountain. In the sky, birds of prey fly during the day, while the Milky Way and thousands of stars appear on the clear summer nights.

LIFE IN THE CAMPUS

The courses in Arethousa are perfect for those wishing an experience off the beaten path, and who would enjoy a course combined with a healthy dose of nature and community, not to mention the opportunity to become acquainted with the local Ikarian culture, which may make you believe that you have stepped out of a time machine. Teachers and coordinators also live on-campus. Although participants will have their own private space, the larger areas on campus – the patio, classrooms, and common kitchen – provide a place for teachers, participants and coordinators to come together for learning, for discussions, for meals, and for enjoyment. Short excursions on the island, going out with the teachers and the other participants in local tavernas, afternoon/evening activities, slide shows, and cooking workshops create an enjoyable learning environment.

FACILITIES

The campus was completed in 2001 and consists of a group of four separate buildings, each designed and constructed with a careful eye to the traditional local architecture.

There are two beds, a kitchenette and a private bathroom in each room. Each room can host 2 or a maximum of 3 people (the third in a bunk-bed). All rooms are located adjacent to the course venues. The rest of the facilities and services include:

  • indoors and open-air classrooms,

  • linen,

  • wifi,

  • free access to a washing machine, and

  • a large common kitchen.

Breakfast or meals are NOT served except during our cooking workshops. However students may use the kitchenette in their room or the common kitchen in order to prepare their breakfast and simple meals.

SURROUNDINGS

Hiking paths are immediately available, and several beaches fairly close by. The road from the villages of Arethousa or Karavostamo to the guesthouse is not paved and there is no traffic. The port of Evdilos, where the ferry arrives, is a village of about 600 inhabitants, and is located 8 km from campus.  In Evdilos participants can find grocery stores, a pharmacy, bank, ATM, and car rentals. In the nearby villages Arethousa and Karavostamo there are small grocery stores, coffee shops and tavernas.
