WHAT

Dance is widespread in Greece and performed for every occasion. In ancient Greece, a person was considered educated if they could dance, and their moral code was defined by the dances they performed. Through dance, Greek citizens celebrated life-span and calendrical events such as Thanksgiving, birth, marriage, supplication, and death. That long tradition of dance continues until our days and is being passed from generation to generation. Dance still plays a significant role in the lives of modern Greeks as they keep celebrating by dancing all the important events, either personal or communal.

In this seminar, we would like to immerse you in that long Greek tradition not only by dancing but also by  learning stories concerning these dances. We will also talk about Greek customs and traditions and familiarize ourselves with Greek traditional costumes of different regions in Greece.

We will finally meet local people and celebrate with them on a magical island, where culture’s authenticity meets nature’s marvelous secrets.

A seminar on Greek Traditional Dances and culture intended for

- Nature and culture lovers who want to explore in depth the tradition of Greece through interacting and learning from locals

- Beginners and intermediate amateur dancers

THE CONCEPT

During this ten-day workshop, you will explore in depth the Greek way of life through dancing, learning about the traditions, interacting with locals, and celebrate with them in the feasts of the island, the famous “Panigyria”. In addition, you will enjoy the beauty of the landscape and learn more about  nature and the long hiking tradition in Ikaria by hiking around the myriad mountain paths of Ikaria.

As food plays a significant role to our lives and is deeply connected to our tradition, you will also have the opportunity not only to taste Greek cuisine but learn its secrets and the recipes of traditional dishes from all over Greece during our cooking and dinner evenings.

HOW

Our course’s focus is not only to learn how to dance but to deeply understand and feel our culture and traditions, through different means and using all the senses of your body- taste, sight, touch, smell, and sound. Our goal is to make you truly experience the island’s way of life.

The programme consists of courses, cultural visits and activities that will take place in the morning and in the afternoon (usually 10.00- 13.00 and 17.00-20.00) over 10 days.  In case the weather does not permit dancing and working outdoors, we will work indoors.
